On May 29, we watched as the final gavel of the 85th Legislative Session fell with HB375 still in committee. It was a bittersweet moment as we knew we lost this battle, but we shifted our focus to the highly-anticipated special session. We organized all of our Lone Star Gunners, but on June 6, we were again disappointed when Gov Abbott's call did not include constitutional carry.
A glimmer of hope is on the horizon, however. For those who are not aware, the Republican Party of Texas (RPT) Chairman, Tom Mechler, resigned on May 20. Following his departure, James Dickey quickly became the grassroots favorite to succeed Mechler. Winning by just one vote, Dickey became the new RPT Chairman on June 5.
Prior to Mechler's resignation, no organization was successful in getting him to apply pressure on the Legislature. This would have greatly helped to advance HB375. Today, however, it appears that Dickey has taken a stand along side us, which will be highly beneficial now and in the future.
On Friday, June 16, Chairman Dickey sent a letter to Lt. Gov. Patrick and Speaker Straus regarding the upcoming special session. He begins by laying out the current agenda set by the Governor on June 6 and asks them to pick Legislators willing to take point on the issues. Dickey closes the letter by urging them to ask Abbott to include constitutional carry this special session, among the remaining RPT Platform Planks. You can read the full letter below:
It is a welcoming sign that Chairman Dickey took time to press Patrick and Straus on the outstanding plank items. I do not know if I could have said the same about his predecessor. Patrick and Straus have not lifted a finger to advance constitutional carry in two Regular Sessions. The only way we can get them to budge is to blow their phones and emails up. If we do nothing, constitutional carry will definitely wait until the 86th Legislative Session, which begins on January 8, 2019. Call them weekdays between 8am and 5pm and tell them to listen to Chairman Dickey's call for constitutional carry.
