Governor Abbott is continuing to ignore gun owners. Despite numerous calls to his Office demanding it, and Republican Party of Texas (RPT) Chairman James Dickey's letter to include it, Governor Abbott is pretending that no one cares about Constitutional Carry. In an email sent out by his office, Governor Abbott proudly waves his faux-2nd Amendment flag in all its glory.
Here is his email in its entirety (click for a larger view):
There are countless issues that we have with this email, the biggest of which are in the latter half. Let me make one thing perfectly clear, Governor Greg Abbott does not prioritize our right to bear arms. Neither does Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick or Speaker Joe Straus. They mention it when they need to for political gain and donations, but they have done absolutely nothing to truly advance our rights.
"In my first year as Governor, I led the fight to pass open carry in Texas" the email reads. If anyone remembers the 2014 Gubernatorial Campaign, Governor Abbott was quoted time and time again saying “If an open carry bill is passed by the House and Senate and arrives at my desk I will sign it into law.” That is not an aggressive stance whatsoever. He not once applied the force of his Office to get open carry passed in 2015, and certainly didn't push to get the Constitutional Carry bill passed either. He merely said that if either bill passed, he would sign it. That is passive support, not leadership.
The email continues, "During this past legislative session, I signed a law drastically reducing handgun licensing fees. No law abiding Texan should be priced out of the ability to exercise their Second Amendment rights." If Governor Abbott supported Constitutional Carry, he would have said that SB16 was not good enough and demand HB375 be sent to his desk. Unfortunately, there is no mention of Constitutional Carry in this email or any acknowledgement of our demands from his Office at all.
Until Governor Abbott lifts a finger to prove otherwise, he is simply a political opportunist, just like Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick. He has never been a true proponent of our 2nd Amendment rights. Yes, he makes headlines when he signs legislation and makes a joke about shooting reporters, but behind the scenes, we need to force his hand.
I know we all want true Constitutional Carry, but wanting only goes so far. We need to act. Call the Governor's Office and inform him that his actions do not reflect his words. Until Constitutional Carry is signed into law, we will not back down. Be sure to remind the Governor that the RPT Chairman is also calling for Constitutional Carry this Special Session. For him to ignore us is the same as ignoring the Republican Party of Texas.
